We all know that the phrase “once in a blue moon” means it’s been a while. But have you ever wondered where the phrase comes from? No, the moon isn’t any bluer than usual. Good guess though.
Its actually just the second full moon in the same month, and that happens every 2 1/2 years or so (hence the phrase). This year it happens on New Years Eve (the first full moon occured on December 2). So I guess you could say that even nature has her own way of ringing in the new year! We were driving home today and as soon as we rounded the corner to get onto the highway, I literally gasped. There it was. The moon was HUGE and seemed to just be suspended in mid air like a giant disco ball. We raced home to grab the gear (I didn’t even have to say anything to Larry, by this time he knows of course it’s a “kodak moment”………in my case a “canon moment”.) lol. We drove around for about 30 minutes looking for some pretty cool moon compositions. Here’s a cute nursery rhyme from Sienna’s book we like to read.
I see the moon
and the moon sees me.
God bless the moon
And God bless me.
Happy New Year everyone. I hope you get to enjoy the blue moon like we did. Be blessed in 2010.

Merry Christmas! | Esther Pederson PhotographyDecember 25th, 2009Nothing makes me happier than to see my kids having fun. It brings back memories of my childhood when I was so carefree. Today we went sledding with my sister’s family. It was the best, and even better to tucker the kids so we can relax afterwards! |

Have a wonderful and safe Christmas everyone. Enjoy your families this day and thank God for everything that you have. He is the reason for the season.

lines| Esther Pederson PhotographyDecember 22nd, 2009Lines. I like them. They can make a photo look interesting, and lead your eye to something you want to draw attention to. I really wasn’t using them to draw attention to anything particular in this photo, but I liked how they looked up against the serene hills behind. It’s a big contrast. And to me that is interesting. I’m trying to expand my creativity this winter with different angles, subjects, and things I wouln’t normally shoot. So far it has been a good learning and growing experience. But having said that, I cannot wait to be shooting people again! I’m dreaming of that day to come soon. |

foxy loxy | Esther Pederson PhotographyDecember 16th, 2009Here is one from August, but I wanted to post it, because it was one of the first shots taken with my 70-200mm 2.8L IS. It is a fabulous lens. Before I got it I was wondering if I would even use it as much as I needed to to justify getting it. But WOW, it is an amazing lens. I use it all the time now for kids, wildlife shots, sports, and much more. It is super versatile. Heavy, yes, but the amazing photos it produces is worth every pound! If you are on the fence, I highly recommend it! |

peace | Esther Pederson PhotographyDecember 14th, 2009I took my new Christmas present out for a test run today. (85mm 1.8) THANK YOU hubby! xoxoxo! This isn’t the best way to showcase the capabilities of this lens, but I loved how this image turned out. I’ll show off the beautiful bokeh and clarity this lens can offer another day. But for now, peace unto you this season! Enjoy. |

my family | Esther Pederson PhotographyDecember 11th, 2009I managed to get a few shots of the family a few days ago for our Christmas card. These were some of the ones that didn’t make the card, so I thought I’d share here. The session started out rough. Levi was practically falling alseep. We tried everything to keep him awake, even bribing the 14 month old with a big lollipop! (shudder) It was supposed to be a fairly warm day by our standards (30 degrees), but the wind made it pretty chilly, resulting in crying/shivering popsicle kids. Literally! I had them crying in the very beginning. So, we switched locations, and pretty much shot a few, warmed up in the car for a few minutes, then shot a few more. I would have loved to get a little more variety, but considering the circumstances, I’m thrilled with what I did manage to get. And the Christmas card will hopefully be out on time this year! Happy Holidays everyone! |

this makes me happy | Esther Pederson PhotographyDecember 7th, 2009Now seeing this makes me HAPPY! Color, and lots of it!! Beautiful surroundings, and of course the adorable little Sienna. This was taken in August, in Council, our second home in the summer. It is SO beautiful there, and best of all it has trees! Ahh, just thinking about it makes me go into a state of bliss. LOL. I was experimenting with color a bit, and followed a friend’s tutorial on color popping. I might have taken it a bit far, but I think after seeing white snow for so long, it pushed me to go for it with this one. I really liked this plant, something I’ve never seen before. It reminded me a bit of a “money tree” type of plant. If anyone has any ideas on this one, please let me know. I know there are a few green thumbs out there. Have a wonderful week everyone! Also, check out this awesome blog for a sweet giveaway. Go4Pro |

my simple dinner | Esther Pederson PhotographyDecember 5th, 2009So…….instead of feeling sorry for myself in this cruddy weather, I snapped a few shots of dinner last night, indoors. Yes, I do have options! I was reminded of this from a fellow photographer friend who can find art in just about anything. Thanks Sharon! Anyway, here’s my quick and easy dinner, pizza and a salad. YUM. The most simple ones are often times the best and most comforting. |

what do i do | Esther Pederson PhotographyDecember 4th, 2009That is exactly it. What do I do when it is 10 degrees and blowing snow. I want to go outside to shoot something, anything! I was driving around today to see if I could find inspiration somewhere from the nice warm seat of my car. Not exactly mind blowing, but I thought this boat looked nice up against all that white. And then I saw this person walking in the middle of no where, or just standing there, wondering which way to go. It’s hard to see a pretty picture when there are no vivid colors to play with, no sun to hit your face, or enough light in the day to get creative. I picked up my camera today for 5 minutes. Feels good, but I need to do this so much more. |

{red} | Esther Pederson PhotographyNovember 21st, 2009These berries reminded me of the holidays which are fast approaching. Ok, let me back up. The holidays are not approaching, they are here!! I love this time of year! The Christmas music, the food, the lights, the snow, and hearing the crackle of wood burning in the wood stove. Being with family and friends is what makes this time of year most memorable, but of course the birth of Jesus Christ is why we celebrate the season. Here’s to the kick off of a safe and wonderful holiday season! |
