Have a safe and wonderful weekend everyone.

I was inspired by this awesome patch of grass, so I had to try it out. My original idea was to shoot Levi, but he was having nothing to do with it, so, surprisingly, Sienna stepped in, (with a little bribery help) and was the perfect model. I love the look of this area, and the mountainous backdrop is so breathtaking. *sigh*, I love Alaska! I know it’s been a while since I posted. I will definetely try and be better at that. I’m crossing my fingers that my new lens gets in today, (Canon 70-200mm 2.8 L IS) so be prepared to be bombarded with photos from that awesome lens! Until then, ciao!

Tundra flowers

June 13, 2009

Tundra flowers. If you drove by without stopping you might just miss them. They are small and they are delicate, but they can withstand the wind, the near freezing nights, and the rain. Oh, the rain! They can definetely withstand the rain. They bring a splash of color to the barren tundra, but you better look quick, cause they don’t last long! Happy Weekend Everyone. P.S.- Here’s a start Mom.

Lately, I’ve been on a texture kick. I’ve used them a lot in my latest photos, and to me it adds something special to something that might have otherwise been overlooked. Converting to good old black and white can also do the trick, but when used together…….YUMMY! I love the look they achieve when used together. This photo was taken a few miles out of town. While these dogs don’t look like they have anything special going on, what you don’t see in the photo is their view. They have the most beautiful ocean view, prime property if you ask me! I see these dogs a lot in the summer only because they live right on the beach we love to visit. Thank you for sharing your beach and view with us doggies!

I’ve taken hundreds of photos, but only a few make it to this blog. We’ve been busy the last few days, mostly outdoors enjoying the nice weather. (Nice meaning, 55 degrees, sunny with patchy clouds and warm wind!) To sum up our events, we went for a drive 35 miles out of town and ran into some musk-ox, reindeer, a fox, ptarmigan, and 2 squirrels. We also had a beach picnic with friends and enjoyed (with just a little worry) watching a crazy ultra lite pilot fly right above our heads. My favorite memory by far this week was picking qiviut with Sienna. Qiviut is wool from the musk-ox, which, after collected, is spun and used to knit with. It is super warm, soft, and beautiful wool. The wool falls off in clumps and is found on the ground, or is “combed” off by the willows and branches when walking through them. While we were picking, Sienna saw a pretty pink tundra flower, which was blowing in the wind. She sadly looked down at it, and said, “Mom, the flower is cold!” She thought the flower was shivering from the wind. Ahhh, cute! Anyway, here’s what we saw the last few days. Enjoy!

The beach is like our playground in Nome. All winter long Sienna told us she wanted to go to the beach. Well, the beach in Nome, in the middle of the winter is pure white, frozen, and doesn’t look like a beach at all. She waited patiently though, and now the beach is finally here! We try to go as much as we can in the summer. On our first trip this year, we found this, and many more like it. Starfish. What a treasure!

Well, I know it’s been a while, but so many things have happened in the last week. Seriously. I guess that means its summertime! We are almost always outside when the weather is nice, especially with these long days of light! I enjoy this time of year so much, after the long, cold, dark winter.

A few days ago I was asked to shoot a wedding almost impromptu, and said yes (I know I’m crazy-and I told you it’s been a busy week!) Well, it was a good experience to get my feet wet, but I’m not jumping on the wedding photography band wagon quite yet. LOL. Here are a few from Dustin and Arielle’s special day. Isn’t she a gorgeous bride? What a photogenic couple. And details….I love the details!
