cranberry scones | Esther Pederson Photography

October 10th, 2013

Scones are one of my most favorite indulgences. I usually only eat them while traveling, though. In addition to my usual latte, I grab one every time I go through the airport coffee shop. But, when I woke up this morning, and it was dark, raining and snowing sideways, cold and dreary, I thought to myself….this seems like a good morning to bake something warm and yummy. I immediately thought of scones, since I’ve been eyeing them on foodgawker the past week. And man, what a good idea it was. These were quick to bake up, and so easy I may just have to make this a monthly treat for my family (and me too!). The great thing about this recipe is the versatility of it. You can add just about any dried fruit or flavor your heart desires. Next time I’ll add about a tsp. of orange zest to this one. Or perhaps try a blueberry lemon flavored scone. Strawberry? Yum!! Here’s the recipe if you want to give them a try. I recommend it!

Simple Scones

2 cups flour
1/3 cup sugar
1 tsp. baking powder
1/4 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
8 TBPS unsalted butter, frozen
1/2 cup raisins (I used craisins)
1/2 cup sour cream
1 egg

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. To your food processor, add flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Mix. To that, add the butter. Pulse until the mixture forms a flaky texture. Add craisins, sour cream and the egg. Pulse until the mixture forms a dough ball. Place on a lightly floured surface and pat the dough into a 7-8″ circle, about 3/4″ thick. Sprinkle with 1 tsp. sugar. Use a sharp knife and cut into 8 triangles. Place on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper, about 1″ apart. Bake until golden, about 15-17 minutes. Cool for 5 minutes and serve warm or at room temperature.scones

Allaryce’s pageant photos | Esther Pederson Photography

October 9th, 2013

This was a new request for me, pageant headshots (for Nationals, nonetheless)!  I was super excited when Allaryce’s mom contacted me to get some photos done for her upcoming pageant and photogenic competition that is being held in Florida next month!  We had planned on doing them all outdoors, but of course our lovely Nome weather interfered a bit with that idea so most of our shots were done indoors.  But as luck would have it, they had the perfect space in their home that had great light!  I couldn’t go home without at least trying to do a few outdoor shots, either, so despite the cold and wind we spent a few minutes around our neighborhood. As soon as we got out there, I was in photographer heaven!  The colors, the light, the model …pretty much everything but the cold and wind were perfect.  Allaryce was a true beauty queen and had a fun and positive attitude and smiles throughout her session with me.  I have no doubt you will do great in your upcoming competition girl!  Good luck and keep aspiring to do great things!Blog1

Ariana…senior 2014 | Esther Pederson Photography

September 26th, 2013

Is there anything sweeter or more adorable and fun than a high school senior? Ok, maybe a puppy, but puppies don’t sit still and do what I tell them for a photo! :) hehe. Ari was TONS of fun, had an amazing style sense, and best of all, we got to shoot in a totally unique location at her request. This was a dream session complete with my own personal assistant and stylist, Dylan. Thank you Dylan for coming along! Like most of my seniors, Ari has built in talent and drive. After all, we took these photos about an hour after her volleyball meet was over! Ain’t no thang!! I couldn’t have asked for much more, it was a fun fun shoot. Good luck with the rest of your season Ari, and I am definitely looking forward to watching you on that basketball court!! Congrats on your senior year gal. Enjoy it! Blog1

Hannah…senior 2014 | Esther Pederson Photography

September 23rd, 2013

Hello, gorgeous! We had tons of fun on Hannah’s session. I was actually worried about the weather from the get go since we started off with sprinkles. BUT, it ended up being a nice evening with beautiful light. Annnd, as soon as we wrapped it up 3 hours later (literally, as soon as we closed the car doors), there was a huge downpour. It was crazy! We got to shoot at Hannah’s family’s camp just outside of Nome, which made it extra special. Surprise, Mom and Dad!! :) I told Hannah not to tell you but I’m sure the beans were spilled a while ago. LOL. I thought it would be a neat surprise since they had no idea. Anyway, everything worked out, and I am so happy and thrilled with Hannah’s images. First off, she’s beautiful, but not only that, she is one of those students who I know has proud parents! She is an excellent cross country runner, has a plan for her future, and to top it off, a great personality–funny gal! I am familiar with her family, I got to shoot her twin brother and sisters senior photos a couple years back. And I thought to myself, as she contacted me, a senior already??! How time flies!! Enjoy your preview Hannah, and yes, the gallery images are coming. Thank you so much for your continued patience! Good luck at Regionals this coming weekend (Rosa too-thanks for all your help on the session), I will be cheering loud and proud! Blog5

Rachel & James | Esther Pederson Photography

September 8th, 2013

In recognition of World Breastfeeding Week back in August, our local regional hospital (Norton Sound Regional Hospital) and organizer Libby Steimel held a raffle which included items for new or expecting moms. One of those prizes was a maternity shoot with me! As it turned out, the winner was my friend Rachel and husband James, who are expecting their first babe next month! Thrilled? YES! I was not only thrilled to be able to capture them on camera for my own sake, but also thrilled that such a deserving and excited mom won this special package.

The expecting months sometimes drag on for moms, especially the last agonizing ones, which are both exhausting, full of excitement and maybe a touch stressful, as you make sure you have every detail lined out before the big day. But once the baby arrives, it seems like you almost forget what things were like when baby was still in utero, as expected since all that energy is now focused on your new baby. To me, one of the times a woman is most beautiful is when carrying a child. Not only for the so called “glow”, but for all the changes that happen only in pregnancy, physically, emotionally and spiritually. It definitely is a special time, and to take this time to preserve the memories for couples is what I love to do. Rachel is one of those people who absolutely shines on camera. The camera loves her look, which is so timeless and elegant. I’m excited for you both, as you anticipate your son’s arrival. This is a time you will never forget or regret. Parenthood is something you can’t describe, but once you experience it, your life changes for the better. You will be great parents, as I have seen BOTH of you work in other children’s lives and outpour your love for them. Can you just imagine what the love will be like for your own flesh and blood? Ahhh, it’s overwhelming to think of it like that. :) Enjoy the preview guys, and again, congratulations! Blgo1

the Hobbs family | Esther Pederson Photography

August 30th, 2013

This session was planned early this spring, not by the Hobbs family, but by a good family friend of theirs, RuthAnn. Their family portraits were a gift from her. What an amazing present to such a loving and giving family! As usual, our unpredictable Nome weather played a factor in the timing of the photos, but once we finally got together it ended up being the perfect evening for photos. The light was soft and wonderful. I knew I would have fun on this session, but little did I know that my heart would completely melt by the end of our time together. The kids (and parents) did their part and more, resulting in beautiful photos they can all cherish for many years to come. Nate (Dad) is also a fellow photographer/videographer, so I had fun utilizing his skills with the reflector and composing the family. Whew, what a blessing- and I think that played a large part in the session going so smoothly. Anyway, what more can I say. This family was picture perfect. They are all such beautiful blessings to each other. Enjoy Hobbs and “Hobbits”! Thank you again for your graciousness towards me, and for all those wonderful hugs at the end! <3Blog1

Mary…senior 2014 | Esther Pederson Photography

August 16th, 2013

Mary! What a fun gal! I loved our time together, and I’m SO glad we snuck in a session before she left for her next adventure! Speaking of adventures, Mary spent her entire summer in Canada at a canoeing camp! How fun is that!?? And to top off her wonderful summer, she just became a new auntie to a beautiful baby girl! I instantly felt a connection with her down to earth, easy going and funny personality. And best of all, she wasn’t afraid to try any of my wacky (awesome!!) ideas! :) Mary actually grew up in a small village outside of Nome (like me), and has traveled throughout her school years attending different educational institutions (I attended boarding school too!). This year, she will be in Anchorage attending college AND finishing her senior year in high school! Wow, smart, beautiful AND a hipster?!! lol. I know this year will be full of awesome memories, so I just want to wish you the best of luck in all your endeavors and I hope to see you again soon! Thanks again, Mary, for choosing me to capture this wonderful time in your life! You totally rocked it!Blog1

sisters | Esther Pederson Photography

July 23rd, 2013

Miss Kiyler and Miss Chanel. These sisters were a lot of fun. I was a little nervous at first because with kids this age, you just never know how the session will turn out. But this was both laid back and energetic–and just how I like it. With sessions like these, I sometimes worry if I captured any great images, only because most of the time the clients aren’t posed or in any way perfectly balanced (how my mind thinks a photo should be–everyone where they need to be). But in the end, these lifestyle portraits are what I really tend to enjoy looking at. They are always natural, playful, and yes, perfect, in their own way! I’m learning that I like this style more and more. It’s hard to let go of that control as a photographer, but when it happens, it can be and usually is a very special thing. I hope you love this preview too, Raenelle!! Most of all, I had fun hanging out with Miss Kiyler, as she was my little companion the whole time. She just melted my heart! What a tiny gal with a big personality. Chanel was so sweet, too. I couldn’t get over her beautiful little smile! You are blessed to have such wonderful girls, enjoy them while you still can! Blog1

Sweet Marcella | Esther Pederson Photography

June 19th, 2013

I love my clients, and I’m so happy when I get to shoot them more than once. This was my second time around with the Pitt family, the first time was when now big sister Miss Shylah was a newborn. Since then, they’ve added sweet Marcella to the family, and she couldn’t be any cuter! I still think Shylah had the best hair at this stage, but hey, who’s comparing! We took these right on Cella’s two week birthday. I see so many similarities between the two, when I look back at Shylah’s newborn photos. I’m glad to have been part of your family’s exciting arrivals and look forward to watching the girlies grow! Lets plan a family session next….on Nome’s beautiful tundra!

David & Julie | Esther Pederson Photography

June 10th, 2013

I had a fun evening with these two. They had no idea they had model potential just waiting to be extracted! But sure enough, the photos came out lovely and I can’t stop smiling as I browse through them. David and Julie are a respected couple in our community who also have some major (and exciting) life changes coming up! After living in Nome for several years, they have decided to move back to Julie’s home state, closer to family, which only means one thing….they are expecting their first baby! I am so thrilled for them, and I know their baby is going to be so loved and dare I say spoiled?! :) I only hope wonderful things for them in the coming months as they transition into their new life. Thank you for being such amazing role models in our community, you will both be missed by many! Best wishes on your journey and please keep in touch. Blog3
